Mechanical engineering

Development of the industry economy

Germany is the third-largest producer of machinery in the world. The German mechanical and plant engineering sector (MAB), which is strongly characterized by small and medium-sized enterprises, is considered a leading export and innovation industry. The industry’s more than 6,600 companies with over one million employees generated total sales of around 229 billion euros in 2019.

For 2021, the VDMA forecasts a production increase of 10 % instead of the previously assumed 7 % compared to the previous year. In addition to the sharp rise in order intake, MAB is also benefiting from the extensive economic stimulus and growth packages in key sales markets. However, in addition to the ongoing pandemic consequences, the industry must prepare for the effects of climate change. The EU’s ambitious climate targets put companies at a considerable competitive disadvantage on the international market.
