The littering of our environment is becoming more and more dramatic and is a growing problem locally and globally, not least for the health of humans, animals and plants – keyword microplastics.
The World Cleanup Day (WCD) aims not only to raise awareness of the extent to which we litter our natural environment, but also to do something about it.
Every year on the third Saturday in September, volunteers from private initiatives, associations, schools, companies, cities and municipalities take to the streets and rid nature of carelessly disposed trash. Every year, more and more people around the world set out to rid their environment of illegally disposed trash. We joined in and, together with our colleagues from Grant Thornton, set an example for a clean, healthy and litter-free nature.
Together we have freed our beautiful hanseatic city from the garbage lying and flying around the Alster and brought it to recycling or professional disposal.
With this we also want to support the excellent Ocean Cleanup project, because much of the garbage ends up in rivers, seas and oceans at some point.
There were several moments of surprise because it is amazing at which places garbage is disposed.

There are some bizarre things and surprising actions!
World Cleanup Day Initiator Germany
“Many people understand that something has to change for a clean, healthy and plastic waste-free future” says Holger Holland, chairman of the implementing organization and initiator Germany.
According to Holger Holland, this year’s largest World Cleanup Day ever took place in Germany on September 17, with nearly 300,000 participants in over 5,000 actions in more than 1,300 communities. This preliminary record result is another milestone in the still so short history of World Cleanup Day.
Of concern is the 70% increase in trash collected per capita to 4.8 kg. As the years before, the littering problem in public spaces has become even bigger. Again plastic waste, with more than 60% share of the collected volume is the biggest problem.
The pollution of our environment by cigarette butts, crown corks and glass bottles / shards are not only widespread, but also poses risks of injury, especially for children and animals.
It was a special day for us that brought us a lot of joy. On the one hand, it was incredibly good for everyone involved to do something meaningful and, above all, visible for the environment and our beautiful city. And on the other hand, we had the opportunity to get to know and appreciate our colleagues in a completely different way.
The commitment of the entire team was incredibly great and exemplary!
And a positive side effect – we had a lot of fun together!
We at Grant Thornton AG and HMC Hanse Management Consulting GmbH carry out social and environmental projects every year, as both areas are very close to our personal hearts. Therefore, we give our employees the opportunity to take an additional paid vacation day for these projects and provide the necessary utensils and clothing.
